New Somerset West public transport interchange to commence operations by May 2024

On Monday, 30 October 2023, the City’s Urban Mobility Portfolio Committee visited the construction of the new public transport interchange (PTI) in Somerset West. The construction of the PTI commenced in January 2022 and is on schedule to be completed in May 2024, provided there are no unforeseen delays.
‘As we wrap up Transport Month, we are excited to see that the construction of the new Somerset West public transport interchange is going according to plan. Key structures are already standing. I would say 80% of this job is already done. This PTI will accommodate minibus-taxi operators, bus services, informal traders and commuters. Convenience and making sure that you travel from a safe space is our objective,' said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The new Somerset West PTI is located on the Corner of Andries Pretorius Street and Victoria Street. It is estimated that it will serve approximately 1 000 commuters and approximately 300 minibus-taxis on weekdays.
Upon completion, those operating from the PTI will travel to 12 destinations, including: Lwandle, Macassar, Firgrove, Strand, Nomzamo, Sir Lowry's Pass Town, Zola, Khayelitsha, Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Grabouw.
